2 Timothy 2:20
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor.
There is a chorus that we sing that says, “Lord make me a vessel of honor a vessel of praise, a vessel to worship you all of my days.” The truth in this little song is that we are made to honor and to praise God. It is our privilege to worship and serve him here on this earth and to bring glory to His name. We are His representative to the world and as such, we should exude a certain kind of lifestyle.
In the beginning God created Adam and Eve. He gave them, as His crowned creation, power and dominion over all the earth. Each day He would come, in the cool of the evening, and walk and talk with them until sin came in and separated them and broke that fellowship.
For centuries, that chasm separated God and man and hindered the plan that God had for fellowship with man. Then came Jesus. He breached the gap and restored fellowship. A new and better era was begun. In this dispensation, man not only could fellowship with God, but became the very temple of God. Man literally became the vessels of God, He has chosen to dwell within the spirit of man. This is one of the most amazing of all things that one could imagine. The Almighty One has taken up residence in His creation, to ever be with them.
Today’s verse and those in context say that there are some vessels of honor and some of dishonor. The chorus mentioned above would seem to imply that God decides who is a vessel of honor and who is a vessel of dishonor. Doesn’t seem right does it? Well, it isn’t. In verse 21 we are told that it is up to the individual person whether they will be a vessel of honor or not. It is each person’s responsibility to do the purging in their lives that will make them a vessel of honor. As is usually the case, the choice is ours. Will you be a vessel of honor or a vessel of dishonor? It is your choice.
