Matthew 7:14
But small is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Jesus was teaching eternal principles to His followers in this passage when He said that the gate was small and the way to eternal life was narrow. Many have taken this to mean that the Christian life is a hard life and that there will only be a few who will find it. Jesus did say that there were few that would find it, but few as compared to how many. When you look at the whole population of the earth since the dawn of creation and all that have rejected Jesus as the Messiah, then you see that comparatively, there are few that find the way. It would be a real stretch of the imagination to say that at any one time that even 1 in 5 people worldwide were really Christians. Therefore, few there be that find it, compared to the whole of the populace, but there have been billions of people during this time. Heaven will have a vast number of people, many have found the truth that Jesus is the one Way, the Truth and the Life.
Now, what did He mean about the way being narrow? It has been commonly accepted that He was saying that the Christian life is a hard life. This is not at all what He meant, if He had wanted to say that it was a hard life, He would have said hard. The fact that the Christian life is narrow is true. But, He also said that His yoke was easy and His burden was light. (Matt. 11:30) At another time, (Luke 12:32) He said, “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom. Now picture this, what could be better than to be walking down the King’s highway with the Lord going before us. Once a noted Christian of the middle ages said that God gives a little bit of Heaven to enjoy on our way to Heaven.
The road to heaven may be narrow, but it is glorious. It is illuminated by the light of God and filled with the fellowship of the friends of Jesus. Narrow only means narrow, not hard. Enjoy your journey as you travel down the road of life on the King’s Highway.
