Zechariah 4:10
For who has despised the day of small things?
There is a principle that you find throughout the whole spectrum of life. It is true in the natural as well as in the spiritual. It is that almost without exception, things start out small and then grow into the fullness of their potential. You will see this truth born out in the plant world. A small seed takes time to develop into a mature plant. In the animal kingdom, babies come as helpless little critters and after some time, they grow into a mature likeness of their parents.
What is true in the natural is also true in the spiritual. It does not matter how grown up or how mature one may be when he becomes a Christian, at the time of conversion we are all babies in Christ. That is why Jesus likened this process to being reborn. Now that is not too hard to comprehend, but where we get into trouble and have problems with this is when we expect to be grown up and mature believers too soon. I will admit here that often the problem is in the other direction. You find people who have been born again for years and yet who are still babes in their spiritual maturity and walk.
I am addressing this to those who desire to grow and to fulfill their calling in this life, those who want to be useful and mature in the Kingdom of God. Notice that this verse says that we are not to despise the day of small things. The Living Bible says the day of small beginnings.
Remember this, God always takes the time to grow you and to mature you, to prepare you so that when called upon to be great in His service, you will be prepared. You will be equipped. You may feel like you are ready for Mt. Everest, but first you must learn to climb in the foothills. Do not despise the small things, give God the time He needs to prepare you for the big things that He has for you.
