John 7:38
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
I can remember when we lived in Colorado going up into the mountains and sitting beside a river that was flowing down out of the high country. There was a steady stream rushing by with all the sounds of water running over rocks. It was so peaceful and serene, especially during the early summer when the snow melt was causing a heavy run off. The power of the water and the relentlessness of it always made me watch in awe and marvel at the power of our God, who created all of this world.
I was constantly reminded of what Jesus told those around Him when He said that out of their hearts, literally bellies, or innermost beings, would flow rivers of living water. Think about the flowing river with all of its splendor and power and think about God and His unlimited power and knowledge. Jesus said that kind of power would flow through our lives, His own power and ability.
This is such a contrast to most Christians that I have come to know over the years. Not in all, but in most cases, the majority of the ones I have met don’t have enough of the living water flowing through their lives to even be identified as a river, maybe a trickle or a muddy river bed where the water once flowed. Isn’t that sad to think that we were created to be channels of God’s mighty river of living water and we can’t even seem to get a trickle.
We must remember that it is Jesus who is the river, self effort will not produce it. Jesus said in our own self, we can do nothing. The key is to believe in Him for the river of power to flow, trust in His ability to produce that flow in your life, and He will do it.
