Exodus 16:4
And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a certain amount every day.
During the days of Israel’s release and travels to the Land of Promise, God did a unique thing to provide for them. Each morning when they awakened, the ground was covered with a bread-like substance called manna. It was in this way that God would sustain them and give them the food that they needed to cross the wilderness.
God gave them directions how they were to use the manna. He said to them for each to gather up what they and their families would need for one day’s meals. The only exception was that on the 6th day they were to gather enough for two days, since the 7th day was the Sabbath, or day of rest, when no work was to be done.
The Word of God is often referred to as the Bread of Life. The Old Testament gathering of manna is a type and picture of the New Testament reading of the Bible.
The Word of God is where we get our spiritual nourishment and strength to make it through the day. That is why it is so important for us to read the Bible daily. It is necessary to get direction, guidance, strength and power for daily living. Just as going without natural food will make one physically weak, so too, going without our spiritual food will make us spiritually weak and will make us vulnerable to the attacks of our enemy. In fact, going without our daily bread will make us susceptible to sickness and disease. The Bible says that the Word of God will be health to our navel and marrow to our bones.
