Spirit And Soul

Hebrews 4:12

For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

It is so important that we as believers get our spirit and soul into harmony one with the other. There is only one way that this can be accomplished; our thinking must be in line with the Word of God. It is impossible for us to believe beyond the actual knowledge that we have of God’s Word.

To understand this better, we must look at the basic make up of man. We were created in the image of God, therefore as God is triune, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, so are we of three parts, spirit, soul and body. The spirit of man is what is able to know and fellowship with God. The soul is made up of our mind, will and emotions; it is the inner man or personality of man. Of course the body is the physical house that we live in.

The soul and the spirit are very closely related, but are not the same. If they were, then this verse would not differentiate between the two. Now in light of this, it is very important to note here that these two must be in harmony if we are to live the life that God intends for us to live. It is possible for the spirit to be enlightened to the things of God without the soul being the beneficiary of these things. Simply put, you can know more in your spirit than you are living in your life or have faith in your heart and doubt in your head.

This is not good and is not God’s way. He wants you to have harmony in your soul and spirit to the point that whatever your spirit knows, your soul accepts and acts upon. He wants you to have faith in His word that goes beyond knowledge to experience, so that all of the promises of the Bible become real to you.

MY WORD CONFESSION: By faith, I bring my mind into total obedience to the Word of God and receive all it has for me.
