Understanding God’s Thoughts

Isaiah 55:8-9

For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

It is impossible to know the thoughts and ways of God, it says so right here in this verse. Not only here, but also in the New Testament it says that eye has not seen and ear has not heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man the things that God has prepared for them that love Him 1 Cor. 2:9. That is what a lot of people will tell you. I am sure that you too have heard these verses used to explain why you cannot know the mind or will of God.

I am glad to say that this is not true, and that you can know the mind of God, you can know the things of God. You do not have to in any way compromise the Word of God to say this either.

If you will look at today’s verse, it simply says that God’s thoughts and ways are higher than man’s. Any one with one eye and half a brain would know that. Sure God’s ways are higher and better than man’s ways. But, it doesn’t say that we can’t know God’s ways, it only says that they are different and better than man’s ways.

If you will look at the verse in second Corinthians, you will see that this verse does not say that man cannot know them, it only says that they are not discerned by the eyes and ears. In other words, they are not naturally discerned. If you will notice what we are told in verse 10 immediately following, you will see that to the contrary, the Holy Spirit does reveal the things of God to us, so that we can know them. God does want us to know His mind and His thoughts. It is even more clearly revealed when we recognize that God has given to us the Bible, His Word. In the Bible, the thoughts of God are recorded for us and for all who will accept and believe them. He does certainly want us to know and to understand His thoughts.

MY WORD CONFESSION: It is God’s will for me to know His thoughts, for I have been given the mind of Christ. 1 Cor. 2:16
