A Pocket Full Of Rocks

1 Samuel 17:40

And he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a wallet; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near the Philistine.

We all recognize this verse as being about the youth named David who killed the mighty giant Goliath, who was single handedly defeating the whole army of Israel. This has always been one of my favorite Old Testament stories. I guess the reason for this is because there is so much truth in this event in the life of a little shepherd boy who would later be a king. This young David went out with no other human backing him up. He had a great faith in God even for a man, but especially so for a young teenage boy. When David faced Goliath, he went armed with only a sling and a pocket full of rocks.

You would not think that David would have a chance to even survive this battle, much less to win it. Here he was trained as a keeper of sheep and here was this huge giant who was trained in combat by the best and was one of the fiercest fighters in the world. Well, David and his pocket full of rocks, by the power of God, totally annihilated this giant with all of his weapons and training.

This tells me that anyone at any time can have victory over any thing. The key to victory is not in what you have, but in who you put your trust in. The Bible tells us that Jesus has totally and completely won the victory over every enemy that we will ever face. It tells us that we too, can be victors over these things, because He lives in us. His victory is our victory, His triumph is our triumph. When God is on our side, we cannot have a successful enemy. You may be facing a Goliath of your own today. If so, remember that with God, just a pocket full of rocks is all you need to win.

MY WORD CONFESSION: Now thanks be to God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ. 2 Corinthians 2:14
