John 5:39

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Upon initial consideration of this verse, most of us would say, “Oh yea, I know what that means.” To a degree, that would be correct. The first and obvious truth that jumps out at us is that Jesus is found to be the Savior and the door through which we enter into eternal life.

As true as this is, there is so much more to discover in this small verse. First, and foremost, we find that the scriptures lead us to Jesus to gain eternal life. I am so glad that salvation is in Christ and Him alone. It would be too bad, if we had to earn any of it ourselves. There would be a noticeable emptiness in Heaven where we humans were supposed to be. In fact, it would be totally empty. There is absolutely nothing that we can do to add to our salvation, it is the free gift of God.

The other thing that I see in this verse, that makes it so vital to me now is that eternal life is a present possession. We have eternal life as an immediate possession when we receive Jesus as our Savior. It is not something that we have to wait until we die to receive. I have news for you, if you don’t already have eternal life when you die, it is too late to get it.

Many people have a misconception about what eternal life is, it is the life that God has. Imagine that, a Christian has as a present possession the very life of God flowing through his life and being. Now, upon searching the Scriptures more fully, we find that God is never at a loss. He always has His needs met. He never has a worry, fret or doubt about the future. He walks and lives in His constant blessing. There is never the need to fear, because He has no enemy that can hurt Him, He has total victory over all His enemies.

Yes, we would do well to search the scriptures, for in them, we find the answer to all of life’s questions and the provision for all of life’s needs.
