Don’t Destroy Your Life

James 3:8

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

We have a hard enough time in this world; we don’t need any more enemies or destructive forces working against us. We are told that we already have the world, the flesh and the devil lined up to help us be defeated. But, that is OK because we have God on our side. He is for us and His Word says that if He is for us, then no one can successfully be against us? That is great news and I am surely glad to hear it. That means that I will have a good and prosperous life.

I am sure that you have heard the statement, “He is his own worst enemy”. You know, that is such a true statement when it comes to our own spiritual health, well-being, and joy. What the world, the flesh and the devil cannot do, we often do to ourselves. We squelch our own victory. We stop the flow of God’s blessings and power. We poison our own joy.

How do we do that? Well, I am glad that you asked. The key to our unraveling is found in this verse. We let our own tongue be the downfall of our lives. If you will notice, the verse says that the unruly tongue is full of deadly poison and that no man can tame it. It takes the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives to control that member of our body, and it is so important for it to be under God’s control. The reason is because there is power in what we speak. Yes, the tongue is a small member of the body, but it can control the life of the one to whom it belongs. For, you will have what you SAY that you have.

I have heard parents say to their children, “You had better watch your tongue.” That is such a good rule for us as believers to adhere to, it will either make us or break us. A man’s belly is filled with the fruit of his lips. Don’t let the poison of an unruly tongue kill the victory that God wants to grow in your life.

MY WORD CONFESSION: Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Ps. 141:3
