Digging In

Ephesians 3:17

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love . . .

I am reminded of stories that I have heard and movies that I have seen where the soldiers were preparing for an attack. They would dig trenches and foxholes to get into so that when the attack of the enemy forces came, they would have some cover and protection. They were said to be “digging in.”

I believe that we as Christians are encouraged by this scripture to dig in to God’s power and provision in our lives. We are to be rooted and grounded in Him. The way that we do this is through love.

If you notice, this passage continues to say that it is through love that we are able to comprehend all the other things of God. When we cultivate and operate in God’s love, we are then better able to comprehend the length, height, depth and breadth of God’s plan and purpose in our lives, able to “dig in” to the things of God

God is love and all that He does is motivated by His love. His blessings come because of His love. His direction in our lives is because He loves us. Even His correction in our lives is because He loves us too much to let us go astray. He wants to keep us out of areas that would be hurtful or harmful to us. Therefore, it stands to reason that if we want to get in on His life, His ways and His program, we must do so by His nature, and that is through love.

God’s love is not our human love forced and exerted by our own efforts, trying to muster up something that we don’t have. It is God’s love itself being released unforced and unhindered through us by the power of the Holy Spirit who indwells us. It is God being who He is and doing what He does naturally through us as a vessel yielded to His service and will.

MY WORD CONFESSION: Through God’s love in me, I am able to comprehend the length, depth, height, and width of His way for me.
