Mark 4:17
And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time; afterward, when persecution or affliction ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
The idea that the Christian life is smooth sailing in calm waters is far from the truth and anyone who tells you differently is simply mistaken or is lying. No where in the Bible is it said that the Christian life is an easy life. We do people a real injustice when we tell them that if they will just get saved them that they will never have any more problems.
The fact is that when one becomes a Christian, he aligns himself up against the enemy of God, the devil. The truth is that we can walk in victory all the time. Victory does not imply the absence of battle, to the contrary, there is no victory without a battle.
Jesus said while He was on the earth that all who would live Godly lives would suffer persecution. He also said that in this world, we would have tribulation. But, He went on to say for us to be of good cheer, because He has overcome the world, and as He is so are we in this world. We too are to be overcomers. Once again, you cannot be an overcomer without something to overcome.
It is a given, that anytime one receives the Word of God, persecution is going to come. The devil is not going to let you, or anyone else for that matter, just get the Word and go with it. He is going to try his best to discourage you, to offend you and to persuade you to drop that Word and run. He knows that if you receive the Word and walk in it, that you will become strong and will soon become unstoppable.
There is a saying that I use a lot around our Church family. It is, "If you can be offended, you will be offended." One of the best lines of defense if foreknowledge. You know now that the devil is going to try to take your word from you, be forewarned, don’t let him do it. God gave you that word, don't let the devil steal it from you. Don’t lose it!
