Be Yourself

Ephesians 2:10

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them

One of the problems that I see with many Christians is the lack of liberty to just be themselves. This is especially true when groups of Christians get together. It seems that there is this pressure to “act” a certain way, a way that is perceived as being spiritual.

I have had the privilege of meeting many wonderful men and women of God, those called to full time vocational ministry. In my times with these people, I have seen some who are laughing, fun loving and normal people go through a drastic transformation when they enter a pulpit or are called on to lead public prayer. There is a change that comes over them. They become rigid, speak in an affected manner (often King James English), and lose their personality, all in what appears to be an attempt to be “spiritual”.

Let me say that the people that I admire the most in the Christian life are those who have learned to be comfortable with themselves, just being who they are in Christ. Those who have learned that all are unique and have talents and giftings in and of themselves to offer the body of Christ. There is no pseudo spirituality in them at all. They have learned the secret that being spiritual does not mean putting on an act. They will be the same at Church, at home or at work, being who they are in Christ and not acting like what they perceive they should be according to the way others act.

Each of us is a unique individual with a God-given plan and purpose for our lives. But, in order to truly succeed at being ourselves, we must stop trying to be like everybody else and allow the Lord to develop us into the unique vessel of honor He has created us to be.

God made you like you are and made you special for His glory. Don’t rob the rest of the world of that person by trying to be someone else, be yourself and enjoy it.

MY WORD CONFESSION: God created me for His good pleasure and I will be who I am in Christ, I will be myself.
