John 12:20-21
And there were certain Greeks among them who came to Phillip and said, “Sir, we would see Jesus.”
There is a lot going on in the Christian world that is not being very productive. You will find that in most churches there is plenty to keep everyone busy. I was told one time by a well to do pastor that if you wanted to keep people in your church, you had to keep them busy. He did a good job of that too. Everyone who would do it, was put on some kind of committee or another. If there weren’t enough committees to go around, he would come up with another one. Almost every night of the week, there was some kind of committee meeting going on in that church. Well, there certainly was a lot of activity there, but there was not too much productivity.
I am convinced that the Greeks in this verse said a whole lot more than they were meaning to. You see, what they said is the key to all of the Christian life. They said that they wanted to see Jesus. It was not a committee meeting they needed. It was not more busy work they were looking for. They were desperate and all they wanted was to see this Jesus that they had heard about.
I believe that we as Christians need to be more concerned with showing people Jesus than we are with showing them our new church buildings, our new carpet, our worship team, or Sunday School program and the likes. The world is not impressed with these things. As Christians, we cannot compete with the world in buildings, meetings and such. You can always find a bigger and better building, but you will never make a better discovery than to discover the perfect Lamb of God. He is who the world is seeking so desperately. It is time that we got down to the real business and started letting Christ be seen in our churches and in our daily lives. Today, will people have to ask you if they can see Jesus, or will they continually be able to see Him in the life that you live?
