Exodus 15:24-25
And the people murmured against Moses . . . and Moses cried out unto the Lord. (paraphrased)
Moses really had his hands full. Here he was going out into the wilderness with an estimated 2 million people who really knew nothing but slavery. They were not very mature, they were not very grateful and they were very selfish and fickle. (I think I have preached in one of their churches.)
Here they were, just delivered by the miraculous and powerful hand of God from hundreds of years of slavery and bondage in Egypt. They had just seen the sea part and all the Egyptian soldiers drown. Now they had a problem with fresh water and were ready to throw in the towel, and Moses with it.
Look at what happens now. It says that the people murmured against Moses. Now that is an understatement of the King James kind. They were getting together a mob and who knows what was on the agenda. It was roast Moses time, and Moses knew it. So, he did the only sensible thing that he could do in a time like that, he cried out unto the Lord. There are two kinds of people in this world. One is the kind that the people of Israel represented. They are the ones who, when everything doesn’t go as they want or expect, they complain, murmur and plot. They call behind the door committee meetings to address the problem.
The other kind is the kind that Moses represents. In the same scenario, they “Cry out to God.” They understand that the same God who delivered them yesterday will do it again today. They are not ashamed to acknowledge their dependence on Him and Him alone. What kind of person are you, a murmurer and complainer or a crier out to God? There is a big difference.
