Hebrews 2:6
But one in a certain place testified saying, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man that thou visitest him?"
I grew up in a time when this question was being asked over and over again. It was not a new question, but for some reason during the late 60's and early 70's, the mixture of the Vietnam conflict along with the threat of nuclear holocaust caused that unsettled generation to seek and search more than ever before. The writers of the time, both Christian and secular, made millions selling books like, I'M OK, YOU'RE OK and later, THE SEARCH FOR SIGNIFICANCE.
If a person believes what the evolutionists tell them, I can understand the need to delve into this question. In their teaching, there really is no clear cut reason for man being on the earth, it was just by some prehistoric accident that man arrived on the scene. Yes, that does leave one wondering, what is life and why am I here.
On the other hand, if you believe the Bible, this is a question that should never have had to be asked. The problem with identity goes all the way back to Adam and Eve. In the Garden, there was no crisis of identity until man disobeyed God and lost his place of prominence. When man chose to do things his own way, he lost his meaningful existence, his reason for being. In essence, the demise of man, his loss of significance, can be summed up in one short statement. "There is no meaning to life apart from God." Man's sin was in trying to find life in his own way and own self, and it just can't be done.
Remember what God said? He said, "Let us make man in our image and in our likeness and let them have dominion over all the earth." There is no fullness in life and no meaning in life apart from fulfilling that purpose for which man was created. Therefore, the message of salvation has more meaning than just going to heaven when one dies, it reinstates man to his first estate, giving him fellowship and relationship with his Creator and placing him in that place of dominion once again. What man lost in Adam, he can regain through salvation. Jesus came to earth to reestablish God's plan and purpose for man. You are not an accident, you are here on divine assignment.
