Ephesians 1:18
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened: that ye may know what is the hope of His calling and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.
I can remember as a child growing up, seeing things that made an impression upon me, but it wasn’t until later years that I really understood the full implications of what I had seen. One of those things was man’s first space walk. I thought it was really something and it was very captivating to me, but it wasn’t until later years that I really began to grasp the magnitude of that accomplishment. I am sure you have had similar experiences in your life too.
I believe that this is what Paul is thinking as he is writing this letter to the church in Ephesus. He is trying to get them to grasp the reality of what it means to be a child of God. His prayer here for them is that they would be able to see and understand what they really have as Christians. He wants them to be able to see beyond just the obvious and into the realm of faith.
I believe that today we need to have that same revelation that Paul is praying for these young believers to have. We know and have some understanding of the elementary principles of salvation. We know that our sins are forgiven and that our eternal home is heaven. For that alone, we are and should be eternally grateful. But, as Paul is teaching here, we need to have the eyes of our understanding opened. That is to say, that we need to comprehend more of what salvation is and what it has brought to us. Salvation is so much more than just getting our sin forgiven. That is the start of it, but it is only the door through which we walk to get all the things that God has for those who are His children.
Salvation opens the way for us to experience all of the abundant and overflowing blessings of God. It is imperative that we see through the eyes of faith if we are to live in all that Jesus purchased for us.
