the secret of contentment

1 Timothy 6:6-7

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

If you ask most people today what they think is the key to living a contented life, most of them would say that contentment comes from accomplishing goals in business, or in attaining great wealth. Perhaps others would say that contentment comes from having good social standing or from having a loving family. All of these are certainly things that we would all like to have and even strive for. There is nothing inherently wrong with any of these things, they just don’t seem to be able to make one content, in and of themselves.

Let me illustrate, I have personally seen people with all of these and even more, who were not at all content. In fact, sometimes it seems that the more of these things one gets, the less content he is. It is like what the Bible says, He who seeks after silver will never be satisfied with silver. You see, those things by themselves will not make you or anyone else really content.

Maybe you have noticed, as have I, that this is certainly the case. Some would ask the question,” Why is this true?” It would seem that if you had all the things this world has to offer, that you would be satisfied or content. This only goes to prove that the Bible is correct in it’s assessment of life when it says that life is more than food and raiment.

The problem is that man was created to have a relationship with God. To the degree that one finds and fulfills that calling in their lives, they will have contentment, and vice versa. This is why you see people on both sides of the issue being content and not being content. You see it is not what you have that fulfills your life, it is who you have. If you have that relationship and fellowship, you will have contentment with or without all the other things.

MY WORD CONFESSION: I will seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and He will add all things to me.
