what must we do?

John 6:28-29

Then said they unto Him, “What shall we do that we might work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said unto them, ”This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.”

I suppose that this question in one form or another is the question that has been asked, over the span of time, more than any other. People are really and truly interested in how to do the things of God, how to work the works of God, how to know God in a personal way and to know that He is pleased with them. Even the heathen have a built in desire to know God and to do works that please Him. Sadly to say, too often, when they find out the truth, they reject it and go their own way, as did the multitudes in Jesus’ life, saying that this is too hard or too costly. Remember the story of the rich young ruler? His was a case just like this.

Jesus answered this question very simply and very honestly when he said that you must believe on the One whom God sent if you want to do the works of God. This is the key to living the victorious, abundant and powerful life that we as Christians should live. You see everything is based on our belief in Jesus.

Jesus told His disciples that they could do nothing without Him. We are told in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ. So, you see the truth is that in Christ we have all that is needed to work all the works of God. In Christ, we have the assurance that we are all that God expects and all that God requires.

I don’t know why some people try to make the Christian life so hard. It really is not all that difficult if we will do it God’s way. Believing in and trusting in Jesus at all times and for all things is the key to living the Christian life. It is not in works and striving. We are told in Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him.” We believed on Him for salvation, now we must believe on Him for the works that accompany salvation.

MY WORD CONFESSION: I believe on the one whom God sent, Jesus Christ, therefore I work the works of God by Him in me.
